Gratitud + Stress

GRATITUDE MOMENT

Thanks to Jhossi (aka the best intern ever!) I watched a seriously life changing TED Talk today about stress. The thesis is that stress is only a negative/harmful thing when we BELIEVE that stress is bad (Mind blown. Must watch!). Realizing how much power we have in our lives by sheer knowledge is just stunning & I love learning about it.

All that to say that after the talk I went for a run (because I also just read an article about how exercise effects our brain) and between the new perspective on stress (because the truth of the matter is I have a lot of stress in my life, as many businesses owners do!) and the endorphins from my run, I had a little epiphany about some unexpected things I am thankful. I figured since these were a few hard-won lessons, that others might find them helpful:

  • BOUNDARIES: I love to say yes to people -it makes me happy to help others. But, as I have gone along in my business, I’ve had to learn that there are times to say “yes” and times to say “no” and that often it is as much of a blessing to people to hear a “no” as it is a “yes”. As much as I may want to, I cannot always go the extra mile and I have been pleasantly surprised to find that people understand that.
  • SYSTEMS: It has been a rollercoaster, but we are finally getting to a point in the business where we have proper systems in place to deal with the various issues that arise. As a result I actually feel empowered to best serve our clients (and know what to do when things don’t go perfectly). It’s hard when you’re starting out to create systems because you cannot really predict what is going to happen, but now, I am all about them. Clear expectations from all fronts, leads to easeful communication.
  • SUPPORT: While at times its still a little unnerving to realize that The Brand Gals is at a point that I literally cannot do it all, at the same time, I am so thankful for the people I have around me. I have the most amazing team! One of the things that the TED Talk touched on today is that when we are stressed, its important to reach out to others around you. Today, I found comfort and strategy from another entrepreneur. In addition to your actual team, family, etc., its also so SO important to have “business buddies” -other entrepreneurs you in your circle whom you are able to process, dream, and strategize with. They’re an entrepreneur’s life blood!

I guess my point to all of this is that I am so blessed to live in a time and a place that I am able to literally evolve as a human being. I have the noble opportunity (and I see it as a responsibility to myself and others) to be better -to change and grow and improve. Tonight I realized that, while life is a journey, I actually HAVE changed and accomplished enough to say things are better today. THANK YOU!

    Wow! Thank you for sharing. I am also learning to say no to some things, what a reliefwhen tthe other person accepts that. It has helped with my stress level and the things I do stress about Ican ccertainly say they have propelled me to be a better person who seeks to help others. Thanks again for sharing this.     I felt really connected to it.

    Indeed, with change, one can prosperous brilliant results.
    Yet it is really sad to know some of people I know are afraid to to grow and improve cuz escape is easier than change.
