Dear Brand Gals – Starting with a Name

q&a14Q:  I get inspired to start my brand, but finding the right name and committing to it scares me. I know this is essential, I just don’t know how to get started. Any advice for the naming process?

A: You are right finding a name for your brand is one of the most important parts of getting your brand off the ground. It defines you, your services, and gives your clients or customers their first impression. Although this task shouldn’t be taken lightly, relax and have fun!

Start by deciding whether you want to specialize or generalize in your skills or products. If you are multi-faceted, try incorporating general words like – visual design or creative agency. Are you a speciality photographer? Make sure your photography speciality is clear either in your name or tagline.

Remember to pick something memorable and simple. Less is usually more with this one. I find it funny when I see company names like Besty’s Grooming, Dog Sitting, and Parrot Specialist of Orange County. Even if you rock at what you do, it will be hard for someone to remember your brand if it’s too complicated and long. Keep it short and sweet, always!

Most importantly, make sure you check with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and your county’s clerk’s office to verify if your potential name has not been taken or trademarked already. You’ll avoid lots of grief by doing this early on.

Good luck. You are one step closer to building your empire!
